Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down Review

26 11 2010

As I finish each Beachbody workout and diet plan, I will write full reviews.  I am not an employee or contractor of any kind for Beachbody, but I have explicitly followed their plans and I will write about my personal experiences with their programs.  My results may not be typical.  This is the first review.

The Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down diet and exercise plan claims users can lose up to 10 pounds and 3 inches off their waists in just the six days it takes to complete the plan.  The 6 Day Slim Down is a combination of a protein-heavy meal plan and alternating Hip Hop Abs workout videos designed to target the waist and abs area.  Here is a break down of each part of the plan, my impressions, and how it worked for me in my busy life.

6 Day Slim Down Eating Plan

The eating plan for this quick start diet eliminates all carbohydrates for the entire six days.  The literature does make clear that this is to be used for only six days and a long term eating plan needs to include complex healthy carbs.  I appreciated that was included since a lot of the “fad” diets just cut carbs and convince people that eating carbs is wrong, when it is absolutely necessary to keep the body healthy.  The diet plan included a lean protein at just about every meal, but varied between types like chicken, fish, eggs, and cheese to name a few.  The meals themselves had recipes that met the calorie requirements that were at least slightly different each day for a little bit of variety.  Although the plan was only six days, some recipes were repeated and every day had a different type of salad for lunch, so it could be considered repetitive.  I, personally, don’t like seafood or mushrooms, so I substituted and it didn’t seem to affect my results in any way.  It did, however, make it even more repetitive since I found myself eating chicken pretty much every night.

It wasn’t too hard to fit the 6 Day Slim Down diet plan into my busy life.  It did require a little pre-planning and shopping more often for the fresh foods that would spoil easier than the processed frozen foods I normally buy.  I packed my lunches at night for the next day, so they were ready to go.  I also had to change around the order of some snacks, because I just didn’t have time to make a shake or eat some of the snacks between classes in the morning.  These slight modifications didn’t seem to affect the results.

Hip Hop Abs Fat Burning Cardio

Shaun T is a high energy hip hop choreographer who drives the Hip Hop Abs videos.  He loves to lift up his shirt and show off his abs, and talk about his abs, and say the word abs a lot.  In fact, he just likes to talk a lot.  He doesn’t stop talking the whole workout.  I don’t mind this at all, but I can see how some people may get annoyed with him easily.  There is an option to make the music louder when the DVD starts and that way you only hear the music and not Shaun T. Perhaps the best part of the Hip Hop Abs videos are the counters at the bottom of the screen.  There is a countdown clock for the entire video and also one for that particular part of the routine so you can really push yourself if there are only a few seconds left before a short “march in place” break.  It seemed to make time go by a lot faster to see how much was left.  One of Shaun T’s crew, Tonya, is also in both videos to keep doing the low impact version of the moves for beginners.

The Hip Hop Abs Fat Burning Cardio workout is about 30 minutes long, including warm up and cool down.  Shaun T and his crew break down all the moves at a slower pace before bringing it up to tempo, so the routine is easy to pick up.  The moves aren’t much different than your typical aerobics video, so even people with little rhythm should be able to do them.  However, it does become more challenging to incorporate Shaun T’s “Tilt, Tuck, Tighten” method of standing abs into all the moves like he does.  That, of course, is the hallmark of the Hip Hop Abs and just doing the moves without the “Tilt, Tuck, Tighten” will reduce results.

As a dance team coach, I really enjoyed the high energy and some of the moves of the videos.  I was a bit disappointed that the moves were actually more like an aerobics video than a dance routine, but there were a few moves that were fun that could be put into a dance routine.  Overall, I really liked the Hip Hop Fat Burning Cardio video.

Hip Hop Abs Total Body Burn

The second video in the rotation for the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down is the Hip Hop Abs Total Body Burn.  This routine is a bit longer at about 40 minutes and includes weight training intervals along with some cardio.  It also works all muscle groups in the body.  I found it more challenging than the Fat Burning Cardio because I’m terribly out of shape and I’ve never had a lot of upper body strength.  In fact, I found, at first, I could not do the entire video as instructed and had to march in place while Shaun T and his crew finished the reps.  By the end of the six days, though, I did push through and finished all the reps in the video without stopping, so I know I was getting stronger.  I, personally, did not use weights, but instead kept it low impact.  It would probably take me a couple of weeks to work up to using weights.  In fact, I found myself following the low impact routines with Tonya, rather than always following Shaun T.  I am sure with more time, I could do the high impact routines.

As promised, I lost up to 10 pounds (I lost 7.5 pounds) and 3 inches off my waist (I lost 2 1/2 inches) on the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down.  I can see a difference in the shape of my body and the way my clothes fit in just that short amount of time (you can see my before and after pictures here).  It was an easy eating plan to follow for the six days and the Hip Hop Abs Fat Burning Cardio and Total Body Burn were easy to follow and challenging enough for me.  People in better shape with less weight to lose may not see as dramatic results as I did, but if they follow the plan and the high impact videos, they will still get a good workout.  I totally recommend the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down as a jump start to a healthy eating and workout lifestyle.

Those embarrassing photos

25 11 2010

Now that I’ve completed the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down (well, I still have dinner left, but that’s it!), it’s time to post the photos.  That’s right…those embarrassing sports bra and shorts only photos.  I’ve got before and after shots from all sides.  Keep in mind my 7 year old took them, so if my head is partially cut off or if it’s crooked, you know why.

There isn’t a HUGE difference, but the difference is noticeable.  I honestly thought it was more noticeable than what I can see in the pictures, at least to myself.  Of course, I think that’s part of my problem with losing weight.  Most people look in the mirror and think they are fat.  I’ve always looked in the mirror and thought I am not fat (even though in pictures I recognize it).  It’s very strange, but it got me to the weight I’m at now, because I never think I am fat or look bad when I really do.

So, without further ado, here are the pictures: Read the rest of this entry »

Last Day of the 6 Day Slim Down

24 11 2010

I made it!  I did it without cheating (I will make it through today) and I did all of the prescribed workouts.  As of this morning, I was down a total of 6 pounds and 2 1/2 inches off my waist.  Pretty darn good.

I even stayed completely on plan even though I went through the McDonalds drive thru for my kids and didn’t get anything for myself.  Yesterday, the students were dismissed at 12:30 and our teacher’s inservice didn’t start until 1:20.  A teacher friend asked me to go to Subway with her, so I did.  However, I didn’t eat anything and I just got a decaffeinated iced tea which is on plan.  I ate my own lunch before we went so I wouldn’t be hungry and tempted to get anything.  And it worked!  It was no problem, even though I absolutely love their buffalo chicken sandwiches.

So I found out that I can stick to a diet and exercise program — at least for 6 days, but that’s a start!  Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I plan on eating normal foods, but I am going to try and watch portions so I don’t undo all the weight loss I’ve done so far.  Then it will be on to Turbo Jam and a longer term program.  Stay tuned!

Going down!

21 11 2010

The scale moved down another 2.5 lbs. today.  Amazing.  I’m down 5 lbs. in 2 days on the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down.  I couldn’t believe it when I saw the 172 on the scale today.  At this rate, I’ll be down 15 lbs. in the 6 days.  However, I know realistically this is water weight and I’m not going to lose that much, but I definitely think it’s possible to lose the 10 they promise in the booklet.  I just have to keep sticking to it as written and not go off track.

I will be in a size smaller pants before Thanksgiving, and that feels great.  I started in a tight 14 pair of jeans and now they are feeling loose.  I did try on a pair of size 12 jeans this morning and I got them up and zipped, but they were pretty tight.  I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think I will be 10 lbs. lighter and down 1 pant size at the end of this 6 Day Slim Down, just like BeachBody says.  I can’t wait to see my results and try their other, long-term plans.

What did that scale say?

20 11 2010

Yeah, I’m one of those people who have to weigh every day on a diet.  Maybe that’s why I give up so easily sometimes, but it’s just in my nature.  So I weighed first thing in the morning yesterday (day 1) and saw I was 177 lbs.  Yikes!  This morning, I got on the scale wearing the same amount of clothes as yesterday and I was already down to 174.5 lbs.  Did I really get the scale to move 2.5 lbs. downward in one day?  Now I’m not naive enough to say that I “lost” 2.5 lbs. in one day because I’m sure it’s just water weight (I was going to the bathroom like every 10 minutes yesterday with all the water I was drinking).  However, it was totally motivating!

Even better is that I can actually see my belly shrinking.  I’m very lucky in that my belly fat is always the first to go when I lose weight.  I have a naturally small waist and nice “indents” around my abs when I’m not severely obese.  I’m starting to see those indents again already.  Very nice.

I got up earlier than my youngest son today so I could work out with minimal interruptions.  Today’s prescribed workout was Hip Hop Abs Total Body Burn and boy did it live up to its name.  I found I couldn’t do all of the moves without killing myself, so there were several times where I did some of the reps and then either modified to a lower intensity or just moved and danced until I could rejoin or the next combo popped up.  I’ve never had strong arms, really, so it will take me awhile to get up to speed with those.  I also found I had trouble doing all of the reps of legs when they stayed on the same leg for a long time, so I would just switch to the other leg and made sure to even out the reps when they switched to the other side.  I’m sure I’ll eventually be able to do it all.

Of the two Hip Hop Abs videos I’ve tried so far, I like the Fat Burning Cardio better.  It was more like dancing.  The one I did today felt more like working out and that’s not something I enjoy.  However, I will stick to what’s prescribed on the 6 Day Slim Down.  Once I’m on to a normal Hip Hop Abs plan, I will probably only do the Total Body Burn once a week or so.  That’s just my personal preference since I don’t like to “work out” but I do like to dance.

So day 2 of the Hip Hop Abs 6 Day Slim Down is off to a roaring start!  I’ve already gotten in my workout and my breakfast.  I took a nice, long, hot shower as a reward and it felt great.  I’m writing up my list of foods I need for the rest of the diet and hitting the grocery store later.  I will lose this weight, darnit!

The Real Day 1

19 11 2010

Well, here I am at 5:18 pm on day 1 of the 6 Day Slim Down with Hip Hop Abs.  I survived the diet (still have dinner to go).  I survived the Hip Hop Abs (or at least I think I have…I’m going to be sore tomorrow!)  I think it has been a darn successful day.

It was especially challenging at lunch.  You see, yesterday at school was the big Thanksgiving Meal day.  Our school lunch is absolutely the best school lunch ever.  The food is homemade and they put out leftovers from the day before for free the next day at lunch (and also any leftover breakfast items).   And I wonder why I’m so overweight!  Anyway, as everyone around me sat around eating the leftover green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, I ate my salad and turkey slices.  It was tough not to go get that stuff, but I did it.

Hip Hop Abs made me sweat.  Today’s prescribed workout was the Fat Burning Cardio video.  Something I learned:  next time do NOT choose the “even LOUDER music” option when you are doing the workout for the first time because you can’t hear the instructor.  Speaking of the instructor, his extreme love of the Pussycat Dolls is a bit creepy.  I’ve never seen a grown man get so excited over “Dontcha”.  It was fun, and it went quickly.  I really like the countdown timer in the corner.  It shows you how much time is left for that dance combo segment and over all time.  The 30 minutes really flew by, and that’s a good thing.

It probably would have been easier if my 7 year old wasn’t getting in my way with his own dances and if my 2 year old didn’t insist on taking a bath RIGHT THEN (which I made the 7 year old give him a bath to take care of both problems at once).

Well, I need to make and eat dinner now since the diet says you have to stop eating 3 hours before you go to sleep and I’ll still have an evening snack to squeeze in somewhere.  At this rate, I could be up all night!

Day 0.5

18 11 2010

I had every intention of starting the 6 Day Slimdown Hip Hop Abs today.  I got up early and had a Chocolate Shakeology, which was gritty because I couldn’t get it all dissolved, but surprisingly very tasty.  I packed the lunch the diet prescribed for day 1 and my morning snack.  It was a good early morning.

Then I went to show choir practice and rolled my ankle doing a box step of all things. I went ahead and ate my lunch, but there was no way I was going to be able to do the Hip Hop Abs. So now the plan is to ice and take care of the ankle for a day or two and start up again on Friday.  I want to be able to do the whole 6 days as described so I can give an accurate review.

So let’s call this morning a trial start and call that successful.
